Stefania Lazar (Saturn Museum in Czeladź) Announcing Changes. The First Modernist Buildings in Będzin After World War I Będzin was situated at the frontiers of a newly established province of Kielce. The town of long history, Będzin remained the seat of poviat authorities, however, all signs showed that it might lose the battle for prestige with the neighboring, rapidly developing town of Sosnowiec. The main objective of the town’s authorities in the first years after gaining independence was to modernize Będzin at all costs applying the tool of avant-garde architecture. At the end of the 1930s, modern buildings started to be constructed in the town, designed by first-rate architects from Warsaw or Krakow. New constructions included a functionalist railway station ‘Będzin-Miasto’, a post office as well as a cluster of blocks of flats erected by Employees Accidents Insurance Institution in Lviv, which was the first residential investment of modern character in the town. The constructed buildings became the symbol of Będzin entering a new era and for a long time functioned as icons of modernity and progress, transforming the traditional face of Będzin.
