Izabela Bożyk (General Władysław Sikorski Mechanical Schools in Kielce) Jan Zdanowicz – Opieliński ‘Wojsznar’ - A Forgotten Officer of Polish Legions and Polish Military Organization and His Links with Kielce Jan Opieliński - Zdanowicz, nom-de-guerre Wojsznar, was born on October 2, 1892 in Warsaw into a family of the intelligentsia. He received his A-levels at a private Merchants’ Trade School in Warsaw. In 1911, he went to Lviv where he started studying at the Lviv Polytechnic, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. He was an activist of the Union of Active Struggle and the Riflemen’s Association in Lviv. After the outbreak of war Opieliński was requested to appear in Krakow and conscripted to the First Cadre Company. He fought in the ranks of the Polish Legions until 1915, taking part in the battles of Anielin and Laski. He was decorated with medals for fighting at the Nida River. By order of Józef Piłsudski, on 9 October 1914 he was appointed second lieutenant and then, following the battles of Łowczówek, lieutenant. In autumn 1915, Opieliński was sent to Warsaw in order to strengthen and support the Polish Military Organization. He became commander of the Warsaw Main Headquarters of the Polish Military Organization and then the chief commander of the PMO for the Austrian Partition. He was a member of the Convention of Organization A and the Military Commission of the provisional Council of State. He died on 4 November, 1918 in Lublin. He was posthumously awarded Virtuti Militari Order, Cross of Valor and the Cross of Independence and promoted to the rank of major. He was the brother of Maria Opielińska, headmaster of grammar school for girls named after Blessed Kinga in the years 1932-39 and an organizer of secret courses during the Nazi occupation.
