Hanna Wójcik – Łagan (Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce) Józef Piłsudski and the year 1914 in School Narrations from the 1930s History always educated Poles. In the 1930s, supported by the branch historiography which stressed the importance of people in history, it became a strong support for some authors of historical politics in developing state education (the state satisfying the needs of people) – a model of education which saw Józef Piłsudski as an icon and a role model (the school obligatorily implemented state policy concerning young generations). The role model was presented in history handbooks, supporting educational materials (cult carriers) used during history lessons at schools as well as during extra-curricular activities (e.g. celebrations of Piłsudski’s name day or sports competitions). The thorough exploration of the ‘creator’ of history was accompanied by popularization of cult behavior. At the same time, historical awareness of young generations of Poles was developed and strengthened. In the times of the Second Republic, constructing the memory of the merits of Józef Piłsudski became a coordinated activity aimed to make him a hero of which all Poles would be proud.
