Lidia Michalska-Bracha (The Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce) Events that took place during the January Uprising have been commemorated in a significant way and have been permanently remembered by Kielce residents of the nineteenth century. It is reflected in memorial crosses, services commemorating the January Uprising outbreak, memory of the insurgents who were killed and executed, memorial objects protected with loving care by Kielce citizens, and documents from 1861-1864.In cultivating the memory of January 1863 the First World War was a real turning point and in particular public commemoration of the January Uprising held in 1916 to 1918. The most significant event took place in Kielce in 1916 to commemorate the 53th anniversary of the January Uprising. It transformed into a public manifestation of Kielce residents’ patriotic feelings. The main organizers of anniversary ceremonies were representatives of independence circles: Women’s League of War Emergency Service, Recruitment Office of the Principal National Committee, Regional Council of Kielce District, Polish Socialist Party, and members of Polish Legions.During the Second Polish Republic period the most significant commemoration events took place in Kielce in 1919, 1923, 1933 and 1938, so in particular in the case of ‘round ‘ anniversaries which had the largest social resonance. An integral part of the tradition of the January Uprising in the 20s and 30s of the twentieth century was to take care of veterans of January 1863 by state institutions. In the first few years after Poland had regained its independence, in Kielce alone there were more than 20 January Uprising veterans known by their first names and surnames. What also played an important role in keeping January 1863 in memory was registration and maintenance of veterans’ burial places which was conducted in Kielce by The Society of Heroes Tombs Maintenance, provincial conservator and Public Works Department.
