Jacek Legieć (The Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce) About Czengery once again Onufry (Ksawery) Czengery is one of the most notorious Russian commanders who suppressed the January Uprising. This text contains previously unknown information about his life and career and opinions of people who had an opportunity to know him personally. He was a son of a Hungarian father and a Polish mother. As the military commander of Kielce district and the commander of 25th Smoleńsk Infantry Regiment he led many operations against the insurgents in the southern part of Radom province. As the commander of troops that fought against the insurgents he acted effectively but very carefully, which may be the reason for some critical opinions on his leadership talents. He was reported in newspapers and rumored to be one of the most brutal and cruel Russian commanders. However, those who met him personally, often being prisoners or prisoners of war, thought his alleged cruelty was limited to verbal threats and malediction. Yet, he was not cruel while passing judgments as many imprisoned men owed him freedom and sometimes even their lives.
