Tadeusz Banaszek, Edyta Żelazko (Kielce) Accommodation conditions for the Kielce garrison in the interwar period

In the interwar period, Kielce was the largest garrison in the province. In the years 1918 – 1921, it was the seat of the Command of No. 3 Kielce General District as well as numerous military units, plants and institutions with the number of soldiers at times exceeding 5,000. Due to the lack of barracks, soldiers resided in private rooms, whose owners were under the obligation to render services for the army, which caused frequent complaints regarding the decisions on the soldiers’ accommodation. From 1922 to 1939, Kielce became the garrison for the Command of the 2nd Legions Infantry Division together with subordinate 4th Legions Infantry Regiment and 2nd Legions Artillery Regiment as well as some military institutions. The accommodation conditions for the garrison units were poor due to the bad condition of the barracks, which were taken over from the occupant, and difficult living situation of the Kielce inhabitants. However, thanks to the determination of both military and city authorities, modern barracks were built in Bukówka city district (for the 4th Legions Infantry Regiment) and Stadion city district (for the 2nd Legions Artillery Regiment). Accommodation needs for officers and non-commissioned officers were satisfied to some extent by building new blocks of flats financed by Military Accommodation Fund. The city received income from leasing some objects to the army and individual flat owners were paid for renting apartments to officers and non-commissioned officers.
