Abstrakt

The issues connected with the size and the composition of the Kielce population have not so far been discussed in scientific literature on the history of the city. Therefore, each time when the need arises, one must refer directly to archival records or search for data in references from other works on the issues. The present work presents the main demographic process taking place in the community of Kielce in the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. It allows us to observe a very interesting phenomenon of reconstruction and modernization of a feudal structure of the Polish society, of course in the scale of one city. The complexity of the problem, as well as size limitations, made it impossible to look at the problem in a more detailed way. The work is mostly based on the reports of the City Council taken directly from the city records or, indirectly, from the statistical documents based on the records. To some extent (due to the impossibility of comparing the data), the work takes into account the first Russian population census from 1897. The majority of the collected information comes from the population records and therefore is criticized. However, until World War I, there were no other materials concerning the statistics of the city population. The presented paper is by no means exhaustive and requires numerous additions. The writer’s objective, however, was to provide an initial data and to pay attention to this interesting problem which so far has been neglected in the literature on the subject.
