Piotr Suliga (Museum of the History of Kielce) Outdoor Sculpture in Kielce. Catalogue The article focuses on the history of outdoor sculpture in Kielce. It is also the first comprehensive catalogue of artistic sculpture in the open public space of the city. The article comprises sculptures situated in squares, parks and in front of public utility buildings. Old and modern religious sculptures, public monuments (with the exception of some works of art regarded as outdoor sculptures rather than monuments), commemorative plaques and stones as well as portrait sculptures situated in the Artists Parkway in the Kielce city park have not been taken into account. In the 1970s and 1980s a project entitled ‘Kielce – the City of Modern Polish Sculpture’ was implemented in Kielce. It aimed at organizing open-air sculpture workshops and exhibitions as well as purchasing sculptures for the city. Kielce was to become a gallery of outdoor sculpture. The project was a continuation of open-air sculpture workshops organized in the 1960s in Orońsko, where the idea to establish a sculpture centre followed by ‘Sculpture Meetings 66’ in Kielce and the first outdoor exhibition of sculpture in the open public space of the city was born. The second part of the article is a catalogue of existing as well as famous past outdoor sculptures made mostly during sculpture workshops. Monuments which were created in different circumstances and for different purposes have not been included.
