Krzysztof Myśliński (Museum of the History of Kielce) Sketchbooks of Andrzej Oleś in Kielce History Museum Andrzej Oleś, a painter from Krakow, lived in Kielce in the years 1936 – 1952. Before 1939 and for a period of time after 1945 he held the position of Regional Conservator of Historical Monuments. The collections of the Kielce History Museum include 12 sketchbooks of the painter from the years 1909, 1915, 1922, 1934, 1937, 1943, 1944, 1947 and 1948. All of them include pencil drawings as well as some chalk drawings and watercolours. The earliest sketchbooks are dominated by the topics connected with artistic interests of the painter: generic and landscape sketches, nudes and character studies. The content of sketchbooks from the period of German occupation in the years 1939 – 1944 and from the years following the Second World war is similar to when Oleś did not hold the function of conservator of historical monuments. In the course of time, there were more sketches of personal character, portraying the artist’s granddaughters or landscapes with some architectural motifs, including many sketches from Kielce showing genre motifs with the city skyline in the background. Sketchbooks from the years 1938 – 1939, when Oleś participated in the renovation works of the Bishops’ palace in Kielce and in the reconstruction of some of its parts into a museum of Marshal Józef Piłsudski, seem particularly valuable for the study of the history of Kielce. At that time Oleś made many drawings and projects connected with the renovation and new interior design of the palace. At the same time, he systematically wrote notes describing the last stage of conservation works and the realization of the project of the museum’s interior. The article is a supplement to the conservation notes by Andrzej Oleś from the years 1928-1929, the period when he held the position of historic monuments conservator in Kraków, which were published there in 1995.
