Jarosław Dulewicz (Kielce) Kielce in the Times of the People’s Republic of Poland – the image of the city in the light of citizens’ memoirs. There is no doubt that the image of Kielce in the period following the Second World War changed significantly. Numerous industrial, municipal and residential investments changed the capital of the Kielce Province (currently the Świętokrzyskie Province) into a metropolis. Autobiographical material, especially memoirs, constitute a useful source of information for analysing the urbanization process of Kielce after the Second World War. Fortunately, a large collection of memoirs of Kielce inhabitants has been preserved by the Regional Public Library in Kielce. Analysing those documents, a changing image of Kielce in the times of the People’s Republic of Poland can be recreated. The memoirs also include opinions of individual citizens on the city with which they were emotionally connected through family relations, work or home. Reading those multi-threaded descriptions seems extremely important, especially because they can be treated as a specific kind of a puzzle thanks to which the image of Kielce in the process of changes can be subjectively reconstructed.
