Marta Pawlina-Meducka „Kielce Newspaper” and the programme of positivism Founded in 1870, “Kielce Newspaper” was addressed to a provincial conservative recipient. It was supposed to serve as a source of local information and a means of communication in business matters. Not avoiding issues close to positivism ideas, it treated them selectively. It supported the positivists’ economic programme, seeing it as a chance to stimulate guberniya economic prosperity and raise the wealth of its residents. It was also interested in the development of education and supported regional research. In April 1874 the following editors took over the newspaper: K. Gajerski, M. Halik, M. Koczanowicz, D. Mieleniewski, S. Możdżeński and A. Płoski. The latter was formally appointed the formal editor and publisher of the newspaper. Its editors, graduates of Warsaw Main School, wanted to stimulate residents of Kielce and surroundings for necessary changes. They perceived the newspaper as a tool they could use to form readers and, through them, a broader public. In articles stating their programmes, feature articles and advice columns they explained the purpose and the meaning of organic work, they pointed the need to establish credit institutions, mutual assistance communities, organizations, seeing them as a necessary condition for economic recovery. There was no response to the intentions of the team. After the six-month „press experiment” the editors handed over the newspaper to Stanisław Sienicki. In his rendition the newspaper skilfully chose only essential elements of the positivist program.
